How Safe is Acupuncture for Pregnant Women?

First and foremost, it is important to state that receiving acupuncture while trying to conceive or while pregnant is safe. In almost all instances, medical doctors have no objections, but if you have reservations, asking your medical doctor for their opinion is always an option.

First Trimester

During the first trimester, it is typical for women to experience fatigue, morning sickness, and headaches, all of which can be treated with acupuncture. In most cases women choose to keep their pregnancies private at this point, causing them to suffer silently. While a woman’s body is preparing for the venture of growing a human, acupuncture can assist in smoothing out the process. Although these symptoms are considered “normal” in early pregnancy, that doesn’t mean they have to be experienced.

Second Trimester

The second trimester is when most women begin to shine. While there can be some heartburn, constipation, hemorrhoids and back pain experienced, in most instances the ailments of the first trimester have abated. Women begin to publicize their pregnancy and “the glow” appears. However, with this growing baby, comes a bigger belly and some back pain. As the pelvis begins to prepare itself for delivery, some tendon and ligament pain can also be felt in that region. Acupuncture can aid in each of these symptoms! Acupuncture has been shown in many studies to be effective and safe for treating pregnancy related issues, especially back pain.

Third Trimester

It’s crunch time. Women may begin to experience some anxiety over what’s to come and back pain and pelvic pain become more apparent. In some cases, the baby may not want to cooperate, resulting in a breech position and in others it may seem like the baby is just too comfortable in the womb. In each of these instances, acupuncture can be a great assistant. It has been proven in studies that acupuncture, if done early enough in the third trimester, can help turn a breech baby, decreasing the potential need for a cesarean birth.

During this trimester we can also assist women in preparing for labor. Labor is hard and while a female’s body is made for it, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t put strain on the body. While nothing can be promised, the goal is to assist a woman to hopefully have an easier and faster labor.

In the event that the baby seems to be resistant to meeting the world, acupuncture can be a great tool. In instances where a medical doctor is discussing induction and the 39th and 40th week begin to pass by, acupuncture treatments can typically aid the body and baby to relax and begin the process of labor.

Forth Trimester/Postpartum

Post birth, no matter what kind, new mothers are tired, sore, and most likely anxious. Stress is put on a mother to breastfeed, care for and bond with a new baby. It seems that all attention is put towards the new baby with very little placed on mom, mentally and physically. While some mothers may take on this role seamlessly, that isn’t always the case. In more cases than not, women experience anxiety, depression, low or no milk supply, and low back and pelvic floor pain.

Acupuncture can be the space that new moms can come to when feeling the above. We can help with low milk supply, the anxieties and depression that can be associated with new motherhood and help heal and replenish the body after birth.
